Video Biographies: A Unique Way to Preserve Your Family History

Last year my family celebrated two big milestones – my parents’ 50th wedding anniversary, and my father’s 80th birthday. In the months leading up to these milestones, my sister and I often discussed how we wanted to celebrate our parents in a meaningful way, tossing around a number of ideas. Then, while attending an Association of Personal Photo Organizers event, I met a fellow Photo Organizer who creates beautiful video biographies, and voila – our perfect idea was born!

My sister and I presented the idea of a video biography to my parents (admitting that perhaps it was more of a gift to us than them!), and they were on board! My sister and I then worked closely with Eileen Dougherty of Backstory Media to prepare interview questions and eventually produce the final product of a wonderful video of my parents sharing stories of their lives growing up, how they met, their life in the military, their marriage, and having children and grandchildren. The video is also beautifully blended with photos and music. To have our family history preserved on high definition film, with our parents voices, expressions and laughter - it is truly priceless. My sister and I, along with my children, will treasure this always.

There are many advantages to having a video biography prepared professionally, including the fact that it actually gets done instead of continuing to put it off (kind of like photo organizing!). In addition, having a professional videographer and editor create your biography will give you a beautiful, high quality product, which will be appreciated now and in future generations. However, you could certainly do something like this yourself. The important thing is to get your loved ones stories recorded while you can. I can guarantee you will never regret it.

If you are in the DC Metropolitan area, reach out to Eileen at Backstory Media for more information about her video biography services.
